Yuri Mazei was born in 1977. He got his PhD degree in Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2002.
In 2008, he has defended his doctoral thesis titled the "Organization of protozoan communities". In 2010 Yuri attained the academic title of Professor at the Department of Zoology and Ecology.
Areas of expertise include: (i) structure and functioning of microbial communities at different spatial and temporal scales in aquatic and terrestrial environment; (ii) paleo-ecological reconstructions of the climate, vegetation and landscape changes during the Holocene; (iii) ecology, taxonomy and phylogeny of free-living testate amoebae, ciliates and heterotrophic flagellates. Prof. Mazei is the author of over 150 research papers in peer-reviewed journals indexed in the Web of Science, and two monographs. He has provided scientific guidance to 12 PhD theses. As visiting professor, Mazei delivered lectures and conducted academic research at different institutions in UK, Switzerland, Italy, China, Japan and India.
Prof. Mazei is the deputy chief editor of the international research journals Protistology and Russian Journal of Ecosystem Ecology, member of the editorial boards of European Journal of Ecology and Nature Conservation Research.
