Tess O'Hara is a final year PhD research student at Newcastle University in the UK. Her research has focused on using citizen science rain observations from private automated weather stations to improve understanding of intense rainfall events that cause flooding. Due to climate change and population shift there is an increasing risk of flooding in urban areas from short but very intense rainfall.
Tess has looked at ways the data from citizen scientists can be used, some of the issues that are unique to citizen science, and the motivations/barriers to participation. She has run workshops with adults and children to promote citizen science and experiential learning around weather and climate science.
