Dr (William) Gareth Rees is Senior Lecturer in the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI), University of Cambridge, UK, where he heads the Polar Landscape and Remote Sensing Group. He is also Adjunct Professor II in the Faculty of Science and Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and a Fellow of Christ's College, University of Cambridge, where he teaches physics. His research is focussed on the technological development and application of Remote Sensing methods, from satellites and other platforms, to Polar environments, with particular emphasis on subarctic vegetation in Russia. Dr Rees has engaged in collaborative research in northern Russia for over 25 years. He also develops innovative teaching related to Remote Sensing at graduate and undergraduate levels, plus education and outreach activities. He is the author of nine books (six as sole author), 12 book chapters and over 100 peer-reviewed articles.
